Phylogeny and biogeography in Solanaceae, Verbenaceae and Bignoniaceae: a comparison of continental and intercontinental diversification patterns

چکیده

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies of Solanales and Lamiales show that Solanaceae, Verbenaceae and Bignoniaceae all diversified in South America. Estimated dates for the stem lineages of all three families imply origins in the Late Cretaceous, at which time South America had separated from the united Gondwanan continent. A comparison of clades in each family shows (1) success in most clades at dispersing to, and diversifying in, North America and/or the Caribbean, (2) a mix of adaptation to novel ecological zones and niche conservation, (3) limited dispersal to continents outside of the western hemisphere, and, where this has occurred, (4) no association between long-distance dispersal and fleshy, animal-dispersed fruits. Shared patterns among the three families contribute to a better understanding of the in situ diversification of the South American flora. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 171, 80–102.

Historical biogeography, divergence times, and diversification patterns of bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus).

Bumble bees (Bombus) are a cold-adapted, largely alpine group that can elucidate patterns of Holarctic historical biogeography, particularly in comparison to the alpine plants with which they likely coevolved. A recently published molecular phylogeny of bumble bees provides uniquely comprehensive species sampling for exploring historical patterns of distribution and diversification. Using this ...

A Preliminary Phylogeny of New World Verbenaceae Based on nrDNA sequences

This study of the New World Verbenoideae concerned evolutionary relationships of genera within the Verbenaceae (subfamily Verbenoideae) based on nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) DNA sequences. The placement of many Verbenacean genera into families have been problematic with many traditional genera being segregated recently into the Lamiaceae. This study included only taxa of ...

Molecular phylogeny and intra- and intercontinental biogeography of Calycanthaceae.

Based on nuclear and chloroplast sequences we resolve species relationships in Calycanthaceae and develop a biogeographic hypothesis that explains their intercontinental disjunctions and intra-continental diversification in eastern Asia. Fossil-calibrated penalized likelihood and Bayesian divergence time estimates indicate that the Northern Hemisphere Calycanthus and Chimonanthus diverged from ...

Diversification and biogeography of Juniperus (Cupressaceae): variable diversification rates and multiple intercontinental dispersals.

• A central aim of biogeography is to understand when and how modern patterns of species diversity and distribution developed. Many plant groups have disjunct distributions within the Northern Hemisphere, but among these very few have been studied that prefer warm semi-arid habitats. • Here we examine the biogeography and diversification history of Juniperus, which occurs in semi-arid habitats ...

Molecular phylogeny, divergence times and biogeography of spiders of the subfamily Euophryinae (Araneae: Salticidae).

We investigate phylogenetic relationships of the jumping spider subfamily Euophryinae, diverse in species and genera in both the Old World and New World. DNA sequence data of four gene regions (nuclear: 28S, Actin 5C; mitochondrial: 16S-ND1, COI) were collected from 263 jumping spider species. The molecular phylogeny obtained by Bayesian, likelihood and parsimony methods strongly supports the m...
